VUCA is an acronym that means Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. Following the September 11th terrorist events in 2001, the United States Army War College was one of the first institutions to introduce the acronym VUCA to describe the situation. To capture the drastically altered and unfamiliar international security environment, military strategists adopted the term VUCA.

In his 2009 book, Leaders of the Future, Bob Johansen of the Institute for the Future updated the VUCA model for the business sector to suit his readers' needs better.

His usage of the term VUCA was intended to represent the tumultuous and unpredictable forces of change that may harm companies. He suggested that new skills, techniques, and behaviors are required to manage in the face of the four VUCA dangers.

These issues reflect a combination of obstacles that people, teams, managers, and organizations in concerned industries must confront to survive and thrive. Individually, these obstacles might be considerable, but they can be overwhelming to overcome when they are combined.

Companies use VUCA to identify hurdles along the path and find the implement a mitigation plan. The military has broadly used this model to tackle life-threatening situations.

The VUCA methodology may respond to the challenges like politics, economics, society, and the environment. Here is a brief description of all four VUCA components:

  1. Volatility: Change that is quick and unpredictable.
  2. Uncertainty: Unpredictable events and situations.
  3. Complexity: A set of complex issues and events with the potential to cause chaos and confusion.
  4. Ambiguity: A potential threat due to misinformation or miscommunication or A lack of clarity or understanding of current events.
